Sparring Recap

Hello everyone! I missed WIAW again! Oops, I actually ate pretty well yesterday too, not too restrictive and no purging incidents, hooray for good days! I spent my day off snuggling with Roxie and doing a bit of tidying in the house, lovely relaxing day! I wish I had more time to spend with Roxie she seems to really appreciate it and seems so much happier when I'm at home most of the day!

Anyway, boxing!

Warm up

Run - stayed at the front of the pack.. think they were going a bit slower than usual... I'm usually a few metres behind. I had to laugh 'cause they were talking about leaving everyone behind even though we weren't going really fast and one of the guys said I was a beast for keeping up.. it made me giggle 'cause I thought what kind of woman takes being called a beast as a compliment lol.. this kind!

5 x 3 minutes heavy bag

Sparring
First proper sparring back... I was rusty but felt pretty confident, did ok.. got plenty to work on! Got some compliments on my jab being nice and fast which was good to hear I'd been working on it with Mike before we broke up... I now have a sore nose and slightly bloody lips due to letting rather more shots in than I would have liked haha! But for first sparring in goodness knows how long I'm happy!

First off I sparred a guy the same weight as me, he's had 17 fights compared to my zero so he toned it down and didn't go as fast or hard as he was against some of the other guys. That was good sparring I was trying to cut him down and get him on the ropes which I managed once but then I was stupid and moved my back on to the ropes (!) Ermm... not my most inteligent moment!! I did land some shots though I'm starting to learn to spot the gaps and pick my shots more which conserves a little energy!

I also sparred a guy who's had around 40 fights and is a GB champ. Obviously he wasn't going full force on me! It was so frustrating sparring him! He just threw a barrage of shots and I couldn't get anywhere near him really, I landed a couple of shots but he landed loads haha. It's good practice though there's a good chance I could come accross someone in a fight who just hopes to overwhelm me by throwing lots straight off and this sort of sparring proves to me I can keep calm, keep moving and avoid as many as possible when under pressure. Then in a fight situation take them down once they've punched themselves out!

I also sparred a fairly young guy who I was a bit tentative about hitting as I knew he was lighter than me... I'm often the lighter person so I don't have to alter my power much.. The coach said I should hit him harder though lol so I did! This guy could punch anyway, and he was fast. That was good sparring, I think he took it really mainly 'cause his punch rate was a lot higher than mine and he got some nice body shots off as I was guarding my face too much and leaving my body open and he spotted the gaps! Hopefully if I wasn't as tired I would be able to even this out a bit more!

Lastly I sparred a guy who was heavier than me but more evenly matched on skills as he hasn't had any fights yet either. He was afraid to hit me and I hope he changes his mind 'cause I think we could be good sparring for each other being at a similar level skill wise. I do understand where he's coming from as I'm always a bit worried I might hit a lighter person a bit hard if I don't alter my power correctly. But if people tone it down too much with me in sparring because I'm a girl I will get in a fight situation and get a shock and that's the last thing I want! We did talk about it so hopefully he will lose his qualms about hitting a girl! I felt like I didn't do too well in this round anyway as I was really tired by this point.. To a non boxer I cannot describe the tiredness you get in sparring haha it's like nothing else, ring fitness feels so hard to acheive!

Circuit, joined by a football team
  • Jumping on to the blocks with 5k medicine ball.. who got on to the top block with the medicine ball oooooh yeah!! Shocked myself there hehe
  • Shrugs
  • Push-ups
  • Star jumps
  • Elevated push-ups
  • Upright rows (20kg)
  • Leg raises
  • Tricep dips
  • Step ups
  • Punches with weights
  • Mountain climbers
  • Weighted hook twist exercise (15kg on one end of olympic barbell)
  • Calf raises
  • Power drives (15kg on one end of olympic barbell)
  • Sit-ups with twist
Then instead of doing the circuit again I had to bail as my dad was giving me a lift home and we were going to be late picking my mum up. I had no feelings of sickness after this workout and was able to eat when I got home. I was so happy! Maybe I've finally kicked this virus to the curb!

I'm getting really excited for my holiday! I have a holiday post coming soon with soooo many pictures in.. got a bit camera happy while I was getting some of my stuff ready for it! It's been five years since I've been out of the country I can't even tell you how excited I am! I'm off now to think about packing my hand luggage and sorting out my holiday make-up... making sure I haven't forgotten to buy anything!

What are your holiday essentials?

Strange Sparring

...and other boxing...

I did go boxing last Thursday before I woke up ill on Friday morning... I can't remember what we did anymore though to be honest! So we'll move on to Mondays... I didn't have the best workout... nutrition was all wrong, didn't eat breakfast before my early shift (gotta be there for 6.45 so not always able to eat that early..) only took a total greek yoghurt with me and forgot I was staying late so at work til 4pm on just a yoghurt after being up since 5.30... managed to eat a banana and 2 slices of toast with pb and honey by about 4.30 but it was too close to training and not enough food overall to do a boxing workout.. By the time I'd finished boxing I felt so sick I couldn't eat anything I just showered and went to sleep... Oh and there was the palaver with the escapee bunny, those of you who follow my twitter (@boxruneat) will probably know all about it... he's still running free in the garden, little b*gger!!

Warm up
Run
Heavy bag 5 x 3 minute (1 minute rest)
Pads 1 x 3 minute (1 minute rest)
Felt so sick and dizzy during these rounds, I didn't feel like my work rate was good at all but I was literally dripping with sweat (sorry tmi!) Not sure whether it had more to do with the poor nutrition or the fact I was just coming back from an illness or maybe a combination of both... I felt like I was either going to puke or pass out blehh

Now, the strange sparring...
We paired off, sat on the floor opposite our partners each person had one leg over the others so you had one leg on top and one leg underneath theirs, you had to sit close so it was emulating in fighting where you couldn't use your footwork to escape an attack.. Let me tell you I was not too enthralled being so close to all the men/boys haha I felt rather awkward but I got on with it! No time to be prudish haha it's not like that anyway obviously I'm just easily embarrassed! Anyway moving on! We did about 5 3 minute rounds with 1 minute rest with a different partner each time. I really enjoyed getting back into some sparring and I think this was about the only sparring I could have coped with tonight full sparring would have been too tiring! I'm glad to say I wasn't flinching as much as I was last time we did touch sparring! I found it hard to get through some of their guards but I found myself timing shots quite well and spotting openings.. I still need a lot of work obviously I'm pretty rusty but it felt good to be doing it again!

After that we did the legs circuit... yowza, mine were like jelly after this!
  • Jumping over a bench with a 5kg medicine ball
  • Jumping onto steps and off again with 15kg bar bell then stepping on and off the steps on the way back..I did it with the proper squats this time, a lower weight though otherwise I think I would have been stuck sat on the floor
  • Clean and jumping lunge press... clean to waist then to shoulders with feet together then press to full arm extension whilst jumping and landing with your feet in a lunge position.. hope that made sense... it would be so much easier to show you.. (15kg)
  • Jumping onto blocks... I got on the big tall scary one hurrah! Granted not with the medicine ball but I didn't end up on my arse, bonus!
  • Lunge jumps over and onto a step
  • Walking lunges with 25kg barbell
  • Bunny hops with 5kg medicine ball
  • Power drive with Olympic barbell plus 10kg on one end
  • Calf extensions
  • Hook movement with Olympic barbell plus 15kg on one end
Thank god we only did this once, I actually couldn't have coped with a second circuit, I seriously considered dropping out 'cause I felt so sick and I do not drop out of workouts lightly, I hate quitting! We did a cool down and I was so glad my dad was giving my a lift home, I felt really rough!! I showered and went straight to bed when I got home, good nights sleep though!

Like a glutton for punishment I went back last night!
Warm up (inc 10 push-ups)
Run
6 x 3 minute heavy bag (1 minute rest)
3 x 3 minute partner footwork drills (1 minute rest)

Cardio circuit 2 mins each station 30s rest between stations

  • Step ups with 15kg weight
  • Incline sit-ups
  • Treadmill
  • Treadmill
  • Cross trainer
  • Rowing machine
  • Rowing machine

and collapse!! (cool down) Felt really rough tonight aswell, bath and straight to bed... I'm hoping I feel better tonight, if not I'll give Thursdays session a miss.

My Foodie Blog Swap goodies arrived from McKayla @ Green Groats.... Sadly they did not survive the journey :-( But I do have the recipe to try them myself when I have the ingredients in... Gutted, they sounded gorgeous! I'll share the recipe with you all anyway.

Peanut Butter Flaxy Fudge Protein Bars
1 cup chocolate protein powder
2/3 cup flaxseed meal
2 TBS natural chunky PB
1/8 cup water
1tsp chia seeds
1tsp cinnamon
1/2tsp maple extract
1/4 tsp stevia

Mix all ingredients together, add a little more water if necessary. Divide into 8 balls and mold into desired shapes, wrap individually and store in fridge or freezer.

What a shame, they sounded so nice!

Luckily I have a few goodies to keep me going, I bought out H&B on their BOGOHP offer over the weekend and my granola I won from Laura @ Keeping Healthy Getting Stylish arrived to keep me snacked up!

H&B goodies
Lots of xylitol (some unpictured... I love this stuff)
Maca powder
Time release B vitamins (stress depletes B vitamins and deficiencies can lead to depression so I figured with everything going on right now I could do with ensuring I'm getting enough!)
Healthy habits bars, 4 hazelnut and honey (my fave), one oat cranberry and one almond pecan to mix things up a bit!
Bear fruit yo-yo, one blueberry, one raspberry.
Bounce protein bars 2 almond, 1 peanut and one spirulina ginseng
Finally 4 tubs of natural PB, 3 smooth (for porridge) and 1 crunchy (for toast)

So... I've never used maca before? Can you share your fave maca recipes with me?

To Box or Not to Box...?

That is the question..

Sorry in advance for a rather rambled and senseless post.. I can't quite get my thoughts clear in my head so getting them to make sense in writing is not going so well!

Those of you who were on twitter on Thursday night might already know but Mike got pretty badly injured during sparring and was in A&E for a painfully long time on Thursday night whilst I was under strict instructions to wait at home. He got his eye socket fractured and will probably need surgery. I'm so upset, angry and frustrated about it all because it shouldn't have happened. The club and coaches made a number of mistakes or poor judgements which lead to it. I've put them in a list to try and attempt to keep some readability!
  1. Uncontrolled sparring - they stand there and let boxers go all out to try and knock each other out. IMO this should not happen in sparring.. I'm quite happy to do hard sparring but just trying to hurt someone for the sake of hurting someone is not teaching either boxer anything. You should be trying things out and learning in sparring not just throwing knock-out shots.
  2. Before it happened Mike had just done a full 2hr session including 3 x 3 minute rounds with someone who was 20kgs heavier than him who had also had 10 bouts to his 1.. Does that sound like fair sparring? - It could be if it was controlled but not going all out.
  3. Then they put him in with a boxer who had just walked in having skipped the rest of the session. Mike had already said he wasn't feeling good and had been cooled down for 10 minutes. The coach was pushy to have him go in so Mike felt like he couldn't really say know. Other boxer tries only to knock people out when he is sparring. Not working on skills just trying to hurt. Nothing said by coaches = Mike gets his eye socket fractured.
  4. Not really related to Mike's eye but another example of bad coaching, they put in inexperienced boxers for the full 3 rounds who just end up getting beaten up for 3 rounds.
  5. They put in people who they haven't seen spar before without properly monitoring it, or testing them out on someone who they know won't be hurt.
  6. On the way to the hospital coach tells Mike this is their 3rd broken bone in a matter of months.. Erm what? No boxing club I have been to has ever had a broken bone in sparring whilst I've been there and these have had three in a matter of months. Cue alarm bells. Something is not right with this clubs sparring...
So now I have a poor boyfriend with a swollen face who can't eat properly 'cause his jaw is all messed up and painful. It doesn't look as bad as I expected it would, when I was waiting at home while he was in A&E I was so worried I'd get upset when I saw the damage. He said if you run your finger along the bone you can feel the missing bits but I haven't been brave enough to do that!!

To be honest, all of this makes me wonder about boxing. As soon as he rung me from hospital and told me what had happened I started questioning if I wanted him to go back in the ring and my thoughts were absolutely not too risky. So then I started thinking well if you're that worried about him do you want to step back in the ring and the honest answer is I'm not sure. I feel like we've had loads of bad luck with boxing, every time we're at a club something goes wrong.. Maybe someone up there is trying to tell us something. I don't know what we're going to do right now.

I'm really angry about the way things happened at the club I feel like they've been really irresponsible, not just with Mike but with the other boxers who have been injured. Some of them had not been going for very long and to be sparring so hard you get a broken bone when you're a new boxer just doesn't seem right to me. Mike thought the sparring I got there a few weeks back should have been stopped. Whilst I was saying I could cope with it even though I was being overpowered he felt it shouldn't have been happening as I wasn't really able to learn anything from it in the last round as all I could do was try to cover up...

What would you do? Would you say enough is enough, it's not working out? I don't know.. If Mike does have to have surgery he probably won't even pass his medical to box anymore so that might answer our questions anyway. I'm so frustrated and angry about it. I wouldn't be if it was an accident but there are clear signs of irresponsibility and negligence from the coaches which we would have seen had we been there longer but I didn't expect the sparring to be that hard everytime... When you try a new club they always seem to spar you hard to test what you're made of so we thought that's what they were doing in our first session and not that it was the norm..

We have been going back and forth with our thoughts.. we're not sure if we want to quit.. It would leave a big hole and I'm not sure what we would fill it with! I guess we might try another combat sport but I don't really feel that attracted to martial arts and MMA seems far more aggressive to me than boxing... What to do, what to do...

Enough of my confused ramblings though, remember the 100 burpee challenge I mentioned in my partner workout post? We did it today! But before we started the burpees we checked our max push-ups to do the 100 push up challenge which Luke recommended to me. My max has gone from 30 to 15 and Mike's is now 30.. guess we've been slacking in the push-up department!

The 100 burpees went ok... Except for Mike beating me by 4 seconds! Dammit! He finished in 6.25 and I did it in 6.29... I was thinking... Would people be interested in doing a 100 burpee blog challenge? Maybe set a base time and see who can knock off the most time in a month? Or set a base number of how many you can do and try and improve on it. Would anyone be up for that? It will build good leg strength... I can hardly walk up or down the stairs after doing it a few hours ago which must be a good thing.. kind of!

I also managed my first lot of the push-up challenge after I'd recovered a bit from the nasty burpees (not selling this 100 burpee challenge very well am I..?) the first week calls for 5 sets, 10, 12, 7, 7, max(12). So today I've done 63 push-ups...not bad, not bad!

Anyway, I'm going to go chill out and watch some tv before bed.. I've had this post in my draft folder all day and I don't think I can make it make any more sense!! Hope you're all having a good week!

Tough Sparring!

Every time we go to a new club I seem to come out thinking, wow I've never been tested like that before. Last night was no exception! For the first time I got out of the ring knowing I would have lost the fight. I feel really happy about it though, I'd rather be tested to my limits in sparring than go into my first fight unprepared and get a shock.

The training went like this;
3 x 2 min skip
0.5(ish) mile run
3 x 2 min bags
4 x 2 min sparring

Round 1
I started off strong and felt like I looked good. I was cutting him down and landing shots, he wasn't landing too much. And when he was, it wasn't too bad.

Round 2
I think at some point during this round I hurt him and he must have thought bring it on! This is when I really started to feel the shots and he started getting more through my guard.

Round 3
He hit me with a strong backhand and bust my lip. Annoyingly he must have known he hurt me cause he asked if I was ok. (I hate showing hurt as if it was a fight it would fire her up!) I said yes and we carried on. He definately took this round, now he was cutting me down and it was me on the ropes. Dammit! He didn't land much while I was on the ropes 'cause I was covering up well with my gloves and arms. I think he gave me a nice big black eye in this round too!

Round 4
Unfortunately by this time I was really tired, and he wasn't as tired. Or he didn't look it as he was still throwing lots of punches. I took quite a lot in this round and got stuck on the ropes again... Need to figure out how to get off the ropes. No-ones really got me on them before, and if they have I've been able to escape! I like to be the one trapping them on the ropes haha, got by my own game plan!

After the sparring the coach said she'd never seen that much heart from a girl before. That was a massive compliment! :-)

Unfortunately I have to get off to work now, TGIF!

Boxing dilemma

Mike and I went back to our very first boxing gym today.. we thought we should give it a go because for the most part we were happy there, we trained regularly and enjoyed it, it's also a lot easier to get to from our house and would mean we would be out of the house for a shorter period of time giving us more time with the pets.

Warm up - jogging and stretching 15 minutes
Skipping 6 x 1.30 rounds 30s of alternative exercise in between
Heavy bag 6 x 2 minute rounds 20s rest
Sparring 5 x ?? minute rounds
Light dumbbell circuit x 3
Core work 15 minutes
Circuit 30s each station
  • Leg raises with medicine ball
  • Weighted lunges
  • Bag slams with medicine ball
  • Sit-ups with medicine ball
  • Medicine ball slams (above head to ground)
  • Chair dips
  • Lifting bag above head from shoulder to shoulder (could not think of a short or good way to describe that one...)
  • Alternate dumbbell press
  • Stair run
  • Raised push-ups (12.. jelly arm syndrome...)
Cool down.

I'm not sure we made the right descision today. All the old problems were still problems. I guess we should have known really... The sparring sessions which were always few and far between were out of control when you got it and today was no exception. They really let the lads go too rough on each other. I know boxing's not a gentle sport but someone with 15+ years of experience should not be allowed to go full force on someone who has not been boxing more than a few months and who is considerably lighter. This was always a problem at the club for the men, they were a lot more cautious with the girls so it never affected me but I didn't like to see it. It happened several times today and it shouldn't. I was put in with someone about 10+ years younger and 15-20kg lighter than me, that was fine because I didn't try to really hurt her (and she's a good little boxer) but it's not the case with a lot of the lads, put in my situation a certain few would have taken advantage and the coaches let them. Several times today I think the sparring should have been stopped. I don't really know what to do. I did love the place and have a huge soft spot for one of the coaches there but I think today just confirmed it's not the right place for us. Problem is now that we've been back and they will expect us to go back, it seems like a real let down to them if we go to another club, and they will know cause the boxing clubs are actually really gossipy!

Well that's my dilemma! I did enjoy the training today it was great to be back in the gym. but it bothers me that people really seem to be out to hurt or that their egos are so big they cannot tone it down and make it responsible and safe so others can enjoy and learn too.. Why do descisions have to get so complicated?!

New Gym and New Job

Mike and I went to the new gym for the first time last night, the training times are pretty late so we pretty much got home ate tea and crashed! I also had my first day at my new job today, I'm really behind on reading all my favourite blogs which makes me sad! I'll be round to say hi soon!

So, the new gym! The training seems pretty good and we got to spar yipeee! Sadly though, we went in our boxing boots so when everyone went out for a 5 mile run we had to skip... I'd pick running over skipping any day of the week so I was gutted! At least we know for next time, take trainers!

There was another girl very close to my weight and similar experience to me so I got some good sparring. Only problem was after the coach saw me on the bags he asked me to go light on her and I ended up going a bit too light on her in the first round and I wasn't throwing enough punches.. I always worry when I have to go light on people cause I don't want to hurt someone who isn't ready for that level.. This girl didn't really need me to go too light on her though which I didn't realise at first. The first round I just took all her shots on my gloves, and she threw a lot! I've never had anyone come flying at me like that before haha, she tired quickly because she threw too much but it was good to be bullied. Now I know that I can block shots when someone comes out like that and that I don't clam up. The second round I still wasn't as busy as I could have been but I continued to block most of her shots and get some good ones in myself. The coach told me in the third round to up it a bit so I did! The third round was definately my best, I threw a lot of good shots and controlled the ring but she did land some good shots too, she threw a lot of hooks which were landing well for her so I had a sore ear at the end haha!

All in all the sparring was competetive and I think we could get a lot out of each other! It seemed like the coach underestimated her as I heard him say to her afterwards that he'd never seen her spar like that! Maybe having another girl to spar with was what she needed to be more competetive and bring out her best. Here's the training we did;

Skipping 30 mins! Damn not bringing trainers!!
Heavy bag 8 x 2 mins 30s rest
Sparring 3 x 2 mins
Cool down 10 mins

I enjoyed it apart from the skipping! The training finished at 9.30 so although I had all the good intentions to write my blog straight away and share my training with you I crashed as soon as I got in!

I had my first day at the new job today. It went pretty well, there was a lot to take in but nothing too hard. I enjoyed the job but I did have a major gripe about it. I was asked to be there at 8.30am until 6pm but I am only paid from 9-5.30... I didn't say anything today because the other manager is in the same position and it's not up to her it's the head office who's saying that but I am not happy about it and I'm not working an extra hour for free every day. I was out from 7.30am and didn't get home until 7, that's almost 12 hours I'm out and to only be paid for 7.5 hours is really frustrating... I'm not sure what to do about it... If anyone has any ideas or suggestions or advice I would really welcome them!

I ate half of my chocolate pulsin pre workout disc on the bus on the way home, it was pretty nice and wasn't too heavy on my stomach before I went out and run a 5k time trial!! The run was soo bloody hard! Even though Mike came with me for some moral support and company I felt sick from mile 1.3 onwards! I think I started a bit fast but that's always my problem! My legs felt bad on the run cause I'd had tough sparring the night before and been on my feet all day.. I absolutely could not believe it when I beat my old 3 mile time, 3 miles in 24.20! 13 seconds off my old time :D aaand that's my new years goal for 3 miles ticked off so maybe I can go for under 24...

Anyway... here are my stats!

3.1 miles in 25.08 average pace 8.06 average HR 179 max HR 190

Mile 1 8.02 HR 169
Mile 2 8.22 HR 183
Mile 3 7.58 HR 185
0.1 .47.58 HR 189

Right I'm off to try and catch up on all my blogs! Hope everyone is good!

Weekly totals and 21/03/10

How has everyone's weekend been? I had my rest day Saturday and I was going to join a last minute race on Sunday but I didn't in the end as although there was on the day registration none of the registration money went to the charity it was supposed to be supporting. As we didn't have any sponsers we didn't want the only money we could give to go to the council and Sainsburys and not where it was needed. I think it's pretty awful actually as the race entry fees will actually have been making profit for someone on an event which was supposed to be for charity. I understand them breaking even but did they really need to make profit when it could have gone to charity.. has anyone else noticed this? There have been a couple of races I've been put of entering as they make out they are for charity but when you actually look into it very little, if any, of the entry fee goes to charity.

Weekly Totals

Miles - 13.39
Push-ups - 55
Chin-ups - 0
Pull-ups - 0
Neck Exercises - 1
Isometric Punches - 0
Wrist Curls - 1
Core - 1

21/03/10
4 x 2 minutes sparring
3 x 2 minutes mitt work

ICT #4
Part 1
10 burpees
20 lunges
30 squats

x 5 rounds

Part 2
10 second pull up hold
10 push ups
10 upright band pulls

x 5 rounds

14.25 mins (last time (27/12/09) I took 21.02 mins!)

The sparring was frustrating this morning, we don't really have the space for it but whilst we're not at a gym we don't want to lose our sparring fitness and endurance. One thing I'm having problems with is that it seems to hurt a lot more at home cause I don't have the same amount of adrenaline as I do in the gym I suppose... The mitt work was good, Mike said I was punching with good power and I thought it went a lot better than the sparring where I just didn't feel like I was landing much, he assures me I landed at least one good body shot though!

I'm pretty impressed by how much I beat my old time on the ICT workout! That was a big surprise! I was really dreading doing it cause I clearly remember last time not being able to walk for days, my legs are feeling pretty sore now, hope I can move tomorrow!! I have a few more Natural Balance reviews, we've recently tried a Trek bar and a chocolatey Nakd bar, both went down well!

Trek - Peanut and Oat

Really nice peanut butter taste
We both felt it delivered good energy
Good protein (11g)
Good ingredients (Dates (38%), Raisins (12%), Peanuts (12%), Soya Crispies (10%), Peanut butter (7%), Apple Juice, Oats, Ginseng Extract, Gingko Biloba Extract.)
On the packet it says 'A sweet, rich, wholefood combination of fast and slow release carbohydrates, protein, fibre, ginkgo biloba and ginseng for sustained alertness, endurance, recovery and hunger control.' - pretty good food! Mike and I shared it after our morning workout but I think it would be good before workouts too.
We both liked that it had the ginseng and gingko biloba extracts.

Nakd - Cocoa Loco

This bar was Mike's favourite (so far!)
Great healthy replacement for a chocolate treat
We thought they would be great in a children's lunch box
One small, or half a big one is enough to satisfy a sweet tooth

Hope everyone has enjoyed the weekend!

09/03/10

Boxing was awesome tonight! I got some really good sparring in and I felt really strong. I didn't get to spar both girls that came down though which was a shame. One of them stormed off before I got to spar her because someone had hurt her, I asked her to come back in with me but she didn't feel up to it. My coach said I would have took her down haha I like his confidence, I think she is a better boxer than me but I would have liked to test myself against her, it would be a real marker of how I've come on since moving clubs as her reach always caused me so much trouble before, I think I would have handled the reach tonight and it would have been competetive. Never mind, I hope they both come back some time soon.

My new guard position is working really well, I didn't really take any shots to the face or body, only one to the eye (which I think will be black tomorrow!!) but really that was my own fault as it was a rebound off my glove so I mustn't have had my guard high and strong enough for that to happen. But I'm happy that was the only thing to go wrong tonight, as I was trying out a new guard I expected a lot more kinks to iron out, and I'm sure stuff will appear over time but for now it was good!

The only major criticisms my coach had for me tonight was that I was showing too much respect and too little aggression. I was finding it hard to be aggressive as I was sparring someone who I knew was nervous and I didn't want to take advantage. I probably should have upped the level a bit though, she is a good boxer she just doesn't have enough confidence in herself, I know she can take my shots cause we used to spar all the time.. I know in a fight this wouldn't be a problem cause I wouldn't have the attatchment as a friend to my opponent, they would just be my opponent so I wouldn't feel any urge to hold back.

I think my fitness has improved, the running must be doing the trick! After the end of the first round I wasn't out of breath at all. That has NEVER happened before! I was so surprised and so pleased! I think it was in part to do with the fact I was trying to box more inteligently and I was picking my shots more carefully, a lot of the time before I have just gone out and thrown masses of punches which can be effective but it's very tiring and I'm probably landing equal amounts just by picking my shots and countering.

My coach told me I should be having my medical on Friday which means all going well I'll be fighting in April. Exciting!!

Well you might notice I didn't quite get the planned core work in this morning! Mike's friend came round and before we knew it it was almost time for boxing! I'm really looking forward to the gym tonight, two girls from my old club might be coming down for some sparring so that should be good, and it will be nice to see them again too. One of them gave me a lot of difficulties when I sparred her in the past cause she is 10kg heavier and has a good reach advantage so I'm hoping I've improved enough to hold my own against her now, we'll see!

Mike's got a fight scheduled for Friday night, I'm excited for him, he's looking really strong and I'm confident he'll do well :)

Boxing terms for non-boxers

It's been brought to my attention that it would be a good idea to clarify some of the terms I use on this blog as most people reading it are not boxers. I'm forgetting that a year ago some of the terms I use I would not have had a clue what they were either! I persuaded Mike to demo some of the terms for me as it's much easier to explain with a visual.. Hope this is helpful!

Sparring
Sparring is basically two boxers practicing the sport in a boxing ring. Sparring is watched over by the coach to ensure both fighters safety and give the fighters feedback and things to work on as the session progresses. The aim is not to hurt your opponent when sparring but rather to practise the skills of the sport, both offensive and defensive. Of course, sometimes there are minor injuries such as a bust lip or on occasion a bust nose but a good coach will always keep control of the sparring to avoid a fighter getting seriously hurt. There can be different types of sparring utilised to help boxers work on particular aspects of the sport;
Standard sparring - Both boxers trying to score blows on one another. In some circumstances the coach may put two boxers in the ring of different weights or abilities and therefore one boxer may be asked to 'pull there punches' a bit which basically means to tone down their power so that their sparring partner is not injured. For example, in my case I am the only girl at the club so I have to spar males. Because of this the coach asks that they don't hit me with all their force due the difference in gender (and experience in many cases). The correct level is hard enough to be realistic but not so hard that one fighter is at a big disadvantage and will be at risk of taking too much damage.
Situational sparring - The coach will give a situation to act out, for example, if one boxer often gets caught on the ropes and struggles to get off them it would be helpful for that boxer to be put on the ropes and given some coaching to help him/her learn how to get out of that situation without getting hurt.
Touch sparring - Like tag, not used very often in the gyms I've been in anyway. I've done it once with guys who were 20-30kgs heavier than me when normal sparring would not have worked. It's more an exercise of reach, finding the distance you need to be from an opponent and tagging them when you're in the right reach area. There is no force involved.
Defences only sparring - Sparring where one boxer is told not to throw punches and to practise their 'defences only'. The boxer who is on defences only will not throw any shots just try to defend the shots being thrown at them from the other boxer, be it by footwork, head movements or hand movements. (see below). This is sometimes used by a coach to familiarise a new boxer to sparring by putting the novice in with an experience boxer and asking the experienced fighter to just defend whilst the novice attacks. It allows the novice to begin to familiarise themselves with sparring without the fear of been hit.

Orthodox Stance

The orthodox stance is adopted by most boxers, as the name suggests. It is the most natural way to box for right handed people (although in rare cases a left handed boxers may adopt this stance). To adopt the orthodox stance you have your left foot in front of your right with the body angled off and your hands should be by the side of your face to guard it. Your body should be angled in a way that it is difficult for an opponent to land body shots as your elbows and arms should protect it. The right handed straight shot is often the boxers most powerful punch.

Southpaw Stance

The southpaw stance is adopted by most left handed boxers (although again, in some cases it may be chosen by a right handed boxer) it is a mirror image of the orthodox stance so the right leg is the lead leg in this stance. In this case the left handed straight shot is often the boxers power punch.

There is an old boxing saying that southpaws should be drowned at birth (!) - because they are so awkward both for fighters and trainers, everything is back to front, trainers must do the demonstrations and mitts in the opposite way to what they're used to. For a boxer it is difficult firstly as the shots come from angles you're not accustomed to (because the majority of fighters are orthodox). Secondly the jab, one of the most useful punches against an orthodox fighter becomes much less effective because it is along the same punch path as the opponents, thirdly as both lead legs are close to each other you find yourself standing on each others feet and tripping over each other. The biggest reason southpaws are difficult opponents is because there aren't very many of them so you could go a long time boxing without sparring one or fighting one and when you did come across one it would be very different to what you had practiced in the gym whereas the southpaw opponent would likely be very used to sparring orthodox opponents and because of this would have an advantage against you. Whilst I have moaned a bit about how tricky I find it sparring a southpaw opponent I'm actually really grateful there is a southpaw close to my weight at my gym because if I ever do come accross one in a bout I will have more experience boxing one and therefore should not be at a dissadvantage.

Focus Mitts - Also known as padwork, this is where the trainer wears pads on their hands and shouts combinations for the boxer to do. It is used to mimic the demands of a fight and to pracitse combinations that can then be used in the ring.

The Punches
(All pictures show the punches from orthodox stance, for a southpaw they would be reversed)
It is a common misconception amongst non boxers that a punch generates its power in the upper body or through the arm muscles of a fighter. In fact a punch starts in the lower body and gains power as it travels up throught the body. This power is achieved through the kinetic linking of a chain of muscles. Much like the way a shotputter or baseball pitcher uses the whole body to throw the ball or shot the boxer must try to throw as much bodyweight into his punch as possible. A punch thrown just using the arm will not be very powerful regardless of the individuals weight.

Jab

The jab is thrown with the boxers lead hand, in orthodox stance this is the left hand, in southpaw the right. It is often the first shot thrown in a combination and can be used defensively by a fighter with a reach advantage to keep a smaller fighter away from them. It is generally considered the most important punch of an orthodox boxer as it is the closest punch to the opponent and can be used to set up most other punch combinations or as a weapon in its own right.

Straight/Right cross
or left cross for a southpaw

The straight punch, or back hand, is a powerful shot that often follows a boxer's jab. Because the punch is thrown using a full half turn of the hip (see picture) the shot can generate a lot of tourque allowing for greater power in the punch. Whilst powerful this shot can be a difficult punch to land on its own as it is thrown with the hand positioned furthest away from the opponent thus making it easier for the opponent to spot and potentially launch a counter attack. For this reason the backhand is generally thrown as part of a combination, usually following a jab from the lead hand as this can help disguise the blow therefore increasing its chances of landing, this is where the boxing saying the old 1 - 2 comes from because the jab followed by the right cross is considered one of the most fundamental punch combinations in the sport of boxing, the jab being the 1 and the cross being the 2.

Hook

The hook is a bent arm shot and is another punch often used within a combination. The lead hook is the most often used as the back hand hook leaves the boxer's guard open. The awkward angle the hook comes from can make it difficult to see. The hook is also a very effective shot when thrown to the opponents body. The power in a hook comes from full rotation of the hips and torso and a twisting of the front foot. Timing and technique are vital for effectivley landing the shot and because of this it is often viewed as the hardest blow to learn as a novice fighter. As you can see from the pictures the arm should be at a right angle and locked into the position.

Uppercut

The uppercut is a punch often thrown on the inside when the fighters are close together (not from long range). It comes up through the opponents guard and if landed will snap the opponents head backwards.

Counterpunching -Counterpunching can be an effective way of boxing, it involves waiting for an opponent to strike, anticipating and defending the blow whilst simultaniously launching a blow yourself to take advantage of the momentary open defence when your opponent attacks leading to targets becoming available which would have otherwise been guarded. It takes skill and timing to land a counter punch but if succesful these blows can often be the most dangerous due to the surprise nature of the blow. I've found it to be most effective against people with shorter reaches than mine as you can block their shots then easily reach them with a counter punch. It can be used against people with longer reaches, I'm just not very good at doing against people with longer reaches!

Combinations - There are many different combinations of punches you can throw in boxing. A combination is basically a series of punches put together to hopefully penetrate the defences of your opponent, you may have heard of a 1 - 2 punch as this is perhaps the most simple and common combination used in the sport. Other popular combinations are 1-1-2, 1-2-3. Combinations work well due to the fact that many boxers can easily block a single shot but it is unlikely that they will be able to block a 2, 3 or 4 punches in a row if they are thrown with good technqiue and at the right time.

Defence
Defending yourself in boxing is as important, if not more important than being able to throw a good punch, the aim is not neccesarily just to throw shots but to be able to defend shots and avoid being hit as well. In amateur boxing a point is scored when a punch connects to the head or body of an opponent so avoiding being hit not only avoids you being hurt it also avoids your opponent scoring a point. There are several types of defence in boxing;
Footwork - simply moving away from the shot, a step back or angle change can be all you need to do to avoid a shot, little actual movement is neccessary.
Head defences - Head defences can be a slip which is turning the angle of your body so your head leans towards your shoulder slightly so the punch glances by the side of the head. Ducking, simply ducking under a shot, bobbing and weaving moving slightly to one side and rolling with the punch, you may not always be quick enough to move right out of the way of a punch but moving with it (away from it) will lessen the damage substantially.
Hand defences - Block - catching the shot on the gloves or arms which does not allow it to make contact with the face or body, parry - parrying a shot deflects it as the boxer taps the punch away sometimes throwing the opponent off balance, both defences lend themselves to lead into a counter attack. Covering up the boxer closes their guard so shots will be taken on the gloves instead of the face

Amateur and professional boxing (the differences) - Amatuer boxing and profressional boxing (the kind you see on the tv) whilst both similar in their nature of attack and defence are actually quite different sports. The word amateur can be misleading as an amateur boxer could in fact be a very experienced and advanced fighter who fights internationally for his or her country in competitions such as the world championships or even the olympic games. The term amateur boxing is just the name used to distinguish the two branches of the sport. Whilst it is true that many succesful amatuer boxers may go on to fight professionally with the hope of earning large amounts of money from fighting some amateur boxers prefer to stay in the amateur sport and may never choose to move onto pro boxing. Some differences between the two sports are that in amateur boxing boxers will box between 3 and 4 rounds depending on experience whereas in professional boxing fights may go on for up to 12 rounds. The scoring is also done very differently in amateur boxing than it is in professional boxing. Whilst top amateur boxers (olympic and international level fighters) can be paid, most amateur boxers will fight just for the presitge or love of the sport and will not be able to earn money from the sport. Once a fighter turns professional he may no longer compete in amateur boxing or fight in the olympics due to a rule banning pro fighters from returning to amateur competition.

If there's anything I've missed do tell me and I'll edit it to add them!

16/02/10

Yesterday Mike and I had a meeting at the university about running a volunteering drop in centre. We're going to be running one every Tuesday now, it sounds really good actually, there are a lot more opportunities out there than I'd realised. We had a lunchtime meeting so we chatted with the lady who runs the local sector of the company and she trained us up then we had some lunch, I got a really nice hummous sandwhich on a wholemeal ciabatta, really good! And a melon and cherry smoothie.. also really good! I'm waiting to hear on a few more voluntary positions, I'll be glad when I can get started on them.

We went to boxing tonight after a near miss! Mike decided he didn't feel too good so cancelled our lift, it's with his dad so I didn't feel like I could ask him to come just for me. I was really fed up, I hate it when plans change, especially so last minute and it had just happened two nights in a row! Anyway, the coach told Mike's dad he had a bout for Mike on Friday night so Mike's dad rung to let him know and he decided we should go to training after all so he could get some good sparring in before the fight. We should be going to boxing again tonight so fingers crossed nothing will go wrong today!!

Sparring - about 15 minutes there was three of us in the ring and we just swapped in and out, me, one southpaw and one orthodox fighter. I'm still struggling against the southpaw, he's hard to figure out hah. Was pretty tired by the time I got to spar so I didn't do as well as I'd have liked, hopefully I can get back in there tonight and do a bit better... I landed some really good shots but they weren't consistent enough..

11-12/02/10

Thank you all so much for the replys about my leg. I decided after reading them and doing some more research and talking to Mike that I probably ought to try and avoid any exercise which impacts my legs like running and skipping at boxing. I'm hoping if I'm a bit more careful with trying to heal it this time I'l be back in full action soon! So I know I posted my workout schedule this week and it looks like I've succeeded in almost entirely ignoring it!! But Aside from the running I feel I have acheived the things I set out to do just in a roundabout way!

This was a pretty good workout, got some good situational practice in like moving away from shots - I have a tendancy to just stand there and block them so I can get straight back in but that's not aways the most successful way if my blocks don't work then I take the shot fully whereas if I were moving and took a shot it would do much less damage! We also practiced Mike pressuring me on the ropes (windowsill heh no ring at home!!) and me getting away from them.

08/02/10

My leg didn't feel up to running yesterday so I swapped Mondays workout with Tuesdays so I'm interval running today! I never stick rigidly to plans, so long as I get the work done I'm not too worried when it gets done. So yesterday was rest in the morning and boxing in the evening. I was really hoping to do some sparring cause after the last session sparring there were some things I wanted to try out agains the southpaw and also I wanted to remember to work the body aswell as the head which I'd been forgetting.

I almost didn't get any sparring it was coming to the end of the session and I was a bit dissappointed but then my coach remembered he hadn't sparred me. I went in with our new coach.. he's coming down from another club three times a week. It was a tiring three rounds! He didn't really hit me but I had trouble hitting him, he moved a lot and kept switching from southpaw to orthodox which was really awkward. I tried out some of the stuff I'd been hoping to with the other southpaw like using the left hook and trying to get on the inside but it wasn't working brilliantly.. I also need some practice on what to do when I get people on the ropes or in the corner cause I did a couple of times tonight but I didn't take advantage and let him get out which would not have been too good if it had been a fight...

Off running intervals soon! 800m today, I hope my leg holds up ok.

02/02/10

Really loved training tonight, had some great sparring and made up for Fridays rubbish session! I thought it was going to be a bit so so cause it was at the end of a tough session but I really enjoyed it and although there is plenty of stuff to work on I think I held my own pretty well. I sparred two of the lads, one orthodox fighter and one southpaw, I was definately more comfortable against the orthodox, I had sparred the southpaw fighter as an orthodox fighter previously and did a lot better against him but it will definately be great practice as a sparring partner in case I ever come across any southpaw fighters. I am so glad I got in some good sparring tonight cause I had felt so down about my bad sparring on Friday, I love the feeling you get after a good training session heh!

Cool down and stretching - 5-10mins

We got home from training really late and couldn't be bothered to cook anything =/ so we ended up getting a chinese, I had some really nice tofu in cashew nuts with vegetables and boiled rice.. yum yum.. sorry there aren't any pictures I was too hungry!

29/01/10

I had one of the worst workouts ever today! Did some boxing work with Mike

2 mile jog warm up
7x2 min rounds sparring 1 min rest
1x2 min pad work

I performed terribly in the sparring... Not keeping my guard up missing shots, taking way more shots than I usually do. I had no defences and my shots felt weak. So frustrating, I hate having bad sparring it really knocks my confidence. I guess I was already feeling rough about not performing well in the sparring and the pad round went terribly. I was going to do three but I cut it short after one cause I'd wound myself up about not performing well and got really upset. I've got a perfectionist tendancy which helps me work hard but it can be so detrimental at times.. It's so silly that I got as upset as I did but I'm putting it down to being overtired at the moment, I really need a good nights sleep!

I cooked Mike and I a good comfort food tea since neither of us had a good workout and were both feeling a bit down in the dumps about it! I made home made chips (fries for the Americans).. I did this by baking some potatoes I like to use Sainsbury's vivaldi potatoes, they're a little pricey but they make the best chips I've ever eaten... Anyway... I bake them in the microwave until they're cooked through then chop them into chip shapes with the skin still on, salt them, and bake them in the oven until they're nice and crispy, no need for oil cause I cook them on non stick baking sheets. With the chips we had baked beans and I had a quorn chicken burger, Mike had quorn sausages and eggs.

p.s. I promise I'll stop winging tomorrow I think I've done nothing but complain this week, I've had an off week - no more whining from now on haha

AM
2 mile light run, intended to be a cardiac output run as I was going to have the morning off since I was tired and knew I was sparring on the evening but ended up starting off a cardiac output run with my boyfriend but our paces were just too different so we had to do different things.

PM
Boxing - 2hrs
Warm up - 10 minutes of jogging, stretching and exercises (included 10 push-ups)
Skipping - 4x2
Heavy bag - 6x2
Sparring - 3x2 minute rounds 1 minute rest
Shuttle runs - 4 sets
Core - 10 minutes
Cool down - 10 minutes stretching

Really enjoyed the sparring tonight, it's the first time I've ever done a full fight length at the boxing gym and I found it really tough on the conditioning, definately need to learn to control my nerves, breathing and improve my conditioning before my first fight. Felt like I did quite well in the sparring, listened to my coach in the rest and tried to do what he was advising me and managed to start cutting my opponent off which is something I hadn't tried before. Good session

05/01/10
