Partner Workouts

I love training with Mike. We both have similar goals and we're both really driven and competetive.. In a good friendly way! I thought I would share some of the workouts we like to do with each other so you can try them with your partners, or friends, or anyone you might coerce into a challenge!

Teamwork
We have a number of exercises and a numeric goal for each exercise and work together to accomplish the goal. Click the link for a more detailed account. The best thing about this is the faster you do it the more benefits you get and the faster you're free to get on with other things!

Isometric holds

One person performs an isometric hold whilst the other completes a certain number of exercises. If the person holding the isometric hold drops it the person doing the exercises has to start from scratch. Examples;
Person 1 holds plank whilst person 2 performs * crunches
Person 1 holds wall sit whilst person 2 performs * squats
Person 1 holds bear hold whilst person 2 performs * push-ups
Person 1 does isometric punches whilst person 2 performs bag work or shadow boxing
Then swap person 2 moves to holds and person 1 performs the exercises!
* choose a number suitably challenging for your personal ability.
Add any of your own isometric holds into the mix and pair them with a related exercise. The possibilities are endless! Include yoga maybe? Anything you like really!

Intervals

We go to the track or a field and run our intervals together but at our own pace.

Race to...
  • 100 burpee challenge (Mike does burpees with the push-up and I do them without, then we're fairly even in speed and can be quite competetive.. plus burpees with a push-up would be more of a strength exercise for me than conditioning..)
  • Magic 50 Here's one account of me doing the magic 50.. I didn't write Mike's time down but we're always racing each other!!
  • Workout Capacity 101 I've got two blog posts about workout capacity 101, note my variation is slightly different to the one on Rosstraining so be sure to check out the first link for the original workout. Here is another of my workout capacity 101 experiences.
Padwork
We put on the pads for each other and shout out combinations. One person starts holding the pads for a few rounds and then we'll swap so we both get time working the pads. To get hold of a set of pads, boxing gloves and hand wraps isn't too expensive and it's a really good workout even if you don't know too much about boxing, it's good stress relief too... Just try not to hit your pad holder in the face... I've come very close to that a few times when my glove has slipped off the pad!!

So, there you have it! Those are the main workouts we do together. I hope this inspires you to get your partner into a joint workout :-)

10-11/03/10

I had a pretty good run yesterday, I wanted to see if I could run 6 miles at my goal half marathon pace, I have no idea if a 9 minute pace for my first half marathon is attainable, but I would absolutely love to do a sub 2hr one! That of course may be impossible! And honestly all I'm really worried about is finishing it but sub 2hrs just sounds good, a nice round number!

I couldn't fit my run yesterday morning so it had to be an afternoon run, this is my least favourite workout time so I hoped it wouldn't affect me too much. I don't think it did...

Afternoon 10/03/10

6 miles 53.59
average pace 8.59
average HR 175

On a side note, the Waitrose shop came yesterday, I was pretty impressed, we got a lot for what we spent considering it's known as one of the more expensive stores, I think perhaps their prices have gone down a bit.. When they had somehow forgotten to deliver two items they re-delivered them with a five pound voucher, not bad! I think we'll be shopping from there again, the food is nice and it actually worked out cheaper than Tescos...who'da thought it!

I also got a freebie at Lush yesterdat, if you take in 5 empty pots you get a free face mask and we'd finally got through 5 pots, I have a yummy smelling oat, banana and vanilla facemask sat in my fridge called Oatifix, I tried it last night and it was lovely, and I still have loads left. Fab!

Today I was at my mental health mentor training again, I'm now all trained up, all I need is my CRB, goodness knows how long that will take! It's my scheduled rest day today but since I didn't get my core or isometrics done yesterday I've done them today, they're not too strenuous so I don't think it matters too much for a one off!

PM 11/03/10
Core - Standing Ab Roll-outs (to a wall) 5 x 10
Isometric Punches - Jab/Straight/L.hook/R.uppercut

3-4/02/10

Sorry I haven't posted for the past two days, I'm not even sure how I ended up so busy but I've barely been on the computer. On Wednesday I did my first ever tempo run, I went into it feeling quietly confident, how wrong was I!!! It was one of the toughest runs yet, I don't know if it's because I took my intervals a bit fast on Monday or if it's down to the fact that the slow base building running I'd been doing can lower your pace temporarily but I could not keep pace. My average heart rate for the fast portion of the run was 178 and my highest was 188, tough!! I hope I do better next time it comes up in the schedule!

03/02/01
AM - Tempo Run
1 mile easy
prescribed pace of 10.11 ran at 10.23 (included running up a flight of stairs which I guess must have slowed me down cause I was on track until then, finished the mile right after)
3 miles at short tempo pace prescribed pace of 8.36, I ran at 8.48 per mile
1 mile easy again, prescribed pace of 10.11, I ran a little faster at 10 minute pace, it didn't feel like I was pushing it too much and I just wanted to get home!
